SEESPITZ-Tip:
Via Pfronten and Vils to Lake Alatsee
A slightly taxing tour, best suited for mountain bikes
This beautiful tour (approx. 23 km) crosses the border along small side roads and dirt tracks along the Zirmgrat, a mountain ridge west of Füssen.
Route
We cross the main road directly at SEESPITZ and turn left onto Alte Steige a few metres later. After climbing this first steep ascent, we cycle along Oberkircher Weg through the motorway underpass. We continue uphill towards Weissensee-Roßmoos, through the Roßmoos district until the crossing with Benkener Weg. Then we turn left. We follow the narrow path further uphill and cycle through the Benken hamlet towards Pfronten-Meilingen along a steep dirt track (Finstertalweg).
Arriving in Pfronten-Meilingen, we are rewarded with a stunning view over the Pfronten Valley. Now we speed down the Falkensteinweg road until we reach a fork at the end of the slope; we turn left onto Achweg and follow the road onto Panoramaweg. After a couple of hundred metres, we reach the ‘Vilsbrücke’ bridge, where a narrow forest path to the left leads towards Vils. This road will lead us past beautiful meadows to Vils in Austria. We then follow the signs towards Lake Alatsee and cycle up a forest path to the lake, back across the border into Germany.
Refreshments
Lake Alatsee offers a wonderful opportunity for a bath and refreshments at the Alatsee Hotels on the eastern shore of the lake. Along Alatseestraße, we then return to Lake Weissensee. Just before the crossing with the main road, we turn left onto the cycling route at the northern shore of Lake Weissensee and return to SEESPITZ.
